Nothing will thrill mom more than a delicious breakfast in bed especially if it’s cooked by her adoring children. This crumpet recipe is an easy one for kids to cook with a little but of supervision from a or older siblings. Once you’ve made the crumpets, you can get creative with a number of different toppings, but we’ve kept this one sweet – just like mom!
1 cup (250ml) all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp white sugar
3/4 cup (180ml) milk
- Get a bowl and sift the flour and baking powder into it.
- Add the sugar.
- Beat the egg separately and then add the beaten egg to the flour mixture as well as the milk, a little splash at a time. Stir consistently as you add the milk until the batter is smooth and free of any lumps. You might need to use a rotator whisk to get it smooth.
Now that you’ve got your mixture ready, turn on the stove to a high heat and brush some butter onto your pan if it isn’t a non-stick pan.
Pour a spoonful of mixture into the pan at a time, you might be able to fit up to four spoonfuls in one pan at the same time… try and make sure they don’t touch.
Watch the crumpet mixture in the pan. When bubbles start to form on the surface, get ready to flip them over. Wait until the bubbles pop and then you know it’s time to turn them using a spatula. Cook lightly on the other side and then remove from the pan and place on a plate.
Once you’ve finished the mixture, it’s time to work on your toppings. There’s nothing quite like plain honey or plain syrup to top, or you could even opt for butter, strawberry jam and whipped cream. Alternatively, you can find a delicious fruity syrup to use and serve with some chopped, fresh strawberries and a pot of tea! Mum is going to be in absolute heaven after this!
